macOS 26 Tahoe arrived in September 2025 with Apple’s new Liquid Glass design, and it carries a special title in Hackintosh history: it is the last macOS release for Intel-based computers. macOS 27 runs only on Apple silicon, so Tahoe is the final version a Hackintosh will ever run.
The good news is that a macOS Tahoe Hackintosh is very achievable with an up-to-date OpenCore EFI. The bad news is that Tahoe removed several things Hackintoshes relied on. This guide covers what works, what breaks, how to fix it and how the installation works, so you can decide whether Tahoe is right for your machine.
Quick answer: Yes, you can install macOS Tahoe on a compatible PC. You need a current OpenCore release, a Tahoe-supported SMBIOS (iMac20,1 or 20,2, MacPro7,1 or MacBookPro16,x), a supported GPU such as an AMD Radeon RX 6600 or Intel UHD 630, and updated kexts. Expect extra work for onboard audio, because Apple removed AppleHDA, and for Broadcom Wi-Fi.
What changed in macOS Tahoe for Hackintosh users
- Final Intel release. Tahoe is the last macOS with x86-64 support, and Apple says Intel Macs on Tahoe will get security updates for about three years.
- Only four Intel Macs supported. The 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019), the 13-inch MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports (2020), the iMac (2020) and the Mac Pro (2019). Your Hackintosh must use a matching SMBIOS.
- AppleHDA removed. The audio driver that AppleALC patches is gone, so analog onboard audio stops working with the usual method.
- More Wi-Fi pain. Broadcom cards already lost native support in Sonoma, and Tahoe keeps it that way.
- New UI. Liquid Glass relies heavily on the GPU, so a properly accelerated graphics card matters more than ever.
macOS Tahoe Hackintosh compatibility
| Component | Works well on Tahoe | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Intel CPU | 8th to 10th gen Core; 11th to 14th gen with extra setup | 12th to 14th gen need CPU topology fixes for hybrid cores. Core Ultra is not recommended. |
| AMD CPU | Ryzen desktop CPUs | Needs the AMD Vanilla kernel patches and a supported Radeon GPU. |
| Graphics | Radeon RX 6600/6800/6900, RX 5000 series, RX 570/580, Vega 56/64, Intel UHD 630 | No support for modern NVIDIA, RX 7000/9000, Intel Arc or Iris Xe. See the GPU list. |
| Wi-Fi | Intel cards via OpenIntelWireless; Broadcom with patches | Native Broadcom support ended in Sonoma. See the Wi-Fi guide. |
| Bluetooth | Broadcom and Intel | Intel Bluetooth may need the -ibtcompatbeta boot argument on Tahoe. |
| Audio | HDMI, DisplayPort and USB audio | Onboard analog audio needs VoodooHDA or an AppleHDA restore. |
| SMBIOS | iMac20,1 / iMac20,2, MacPro7,1, MacBookPro16,1 / 16,2 / 16,4 | Pick the one that matches your CPU and GPU setup. |
As a rule of thumb, desktops with an Intel UHD 630 iGPU usually use iMac20,1 or 20,2, desktops with a Radeon card and no usable iGPU usually use MacPro7,1, and laptops use MacBookPro16,x.
What breaks in Tahoe, and how to fix it
Onboard audio (AppleHDA removed)
Apple removed AppleHDA.kext in Tahoe, so AppleALC, which patches AppleHDA to support Realtek and other codecs, can no longer provide analog audio. Digital audio over HDMI, DisplayPort and USB still works. Your options are:
- VoodooHDA, an open-source audio driver that works with many codecs. Quality and volume can be weaker, and it needs a relaxed SIP setting (csr-active-config 03000000 per the Dortania guide).
- Restoring AppleHDA from a Kernel Debug Kit with community tools. It works well, but it needs partially disabled SIP and must be redone after every macOS update.
- A USB audio interface or DAC, which works natively and is the simplest option for creators.
- Staying on Sequoia if perfect onboard audio matters more than Tahoe.
We cover each option in detail in Hackintosh audio not working on Tahoe.
Broadcom Wi-Fi
Popular Broadcom cards such as the BCM94360 lost native drivers in Sonoma. They can be restored with root patches (the OpenCore Legacy Patcher approach), which requires relaxed security settings. The Dortania Tahoe notes also mention a newer AppleBCMWLANCompanion kext, but it is described as not fully stable yet, requires VT-d and does not work on AMD systems. Intel Wi-Fi cards with the OpenIntelWireless drivers are often the easier route now.
Graphics and WhateverGreen
Most AMD Radeon cards work, but the Dortania notes report problems with WhateverGreen connector patching on Tahoe. If you get kernel panics with a Radeon card, the documented workaround is to remove WhateverGreen and apply the pikera patch manually in your config.plist.
Software updates
To receive over-the-air updates, Tahoe Hackintoshes typically need RestrictEvents with the revpatch=sbvmm boot argument and SecureBootModel set to Disabled, or an alternative such as the iBridged kext that keeps secure boot enabled.
Before you start: checklist
- A full backup of anything important on the target drive
- Your exact CPU, motherboard or laptop model, GPU, Wi-Fi card and audio codec
- A USB flash drive of 16 GB or more
- A wired internet connection if possible (Wi-Fi may not work during install)
- The latest BIOS for your motherboard
- The latest OpenCore release and current versions of Lilu, VirtualSMC, WhateverGreen and your other kexts
How to install macOS Tahoe on a PC: overview
The Dortania OpenCore Install Guide is the reference for every step below. This overview shows how the process fits together.
- Create the installer. From Windows, use OpenCore’s macrecovery tool to download the Tahoe recovery image and put it on a FAT32 USB drive.
- Build your EFI. Add the OpenCore files, the kexts your hardware needs and ACPI tables (SSDTs) for your platform, then configure config.plist with ProperTree following the guide for your CPU generation.
- Generate a SMBIOS. Use GenSMBIOS to create a unique serial, MLB and UUID for a Tahoe-supported model.
- Set the BIOS. Typically disable CSM, Secure Boot, Fast Boot and CFG Lock where possible, and enable Above 4G Decoding and XHCI Hand-off. The exact list depends on your board.
- Boot and install. Boot the USB, erase the target drive as APFS in Disk Utility and install Tahoe. The installer downloads macOS during setup, so expect several reboots.
- Post-install. Copy the EFI to your internal drive, map USB ports, fix audio, configure sleep and set up iCloud and iMessage.
Tip: most failed Tahoe installs come from outdated OpenCore or kexts, a SMBIOS Tahoe does not support, or leftover patches from an old EFI. Starting with a clean EFI saves hours.
Tahoe or Sequoia: which should you install?
| Choose Tahoe if… | Choose Sequoia if… |
|---|---|
| You want the longest security update window | You need perfect onboard analog audio without workarounds |
| Your GPU is a Radeon RX 5000/6000 or Intel UHD 630 | You rely on a Broadcom card and don’t want root patches |
| Your apps already support macOS 26 | A key app or plugin isn’t ready for Tahoe yet |
| You want the new Liquid Glass design | You value stability over the newest features |

Frequently asked questions
Can you hackintosh macOS Tahoe?
Yes. With a current OpenCore EFI, a Tahoe-supported SMBIOS and compatible hardware, macOS 26 Tahoe installs and runs well on many Intel and AMD PCs.
Which SMBIOS should I use for macOS Tahoe?
Tahoe supports only iMac20,1 and iMac20,2, MacPro7,1 and MacBookPro16,x among Intel Macs. Desktops with an Intel iGPU usually use iMac20,x, Radeon-only desktops MacPro7,1, and laptops MacBookPro16,x.
Does NVIDIA work on macOS Tahoe?
No. There are no macOS drivers for modern NVIDIA GPUs. Use an AMD Radeon RX 5000/6000 card or supported Intel integrated graphics.
Why is there no sound on my Tahoe Hackintosh?
Apple removed AppleHDA in Tahoe, which breaks the usual AppleALC audio setup. Use VoodooHDA, restore AppleHDA, use USB or HDMI audio, or stay on Sequoia.
Is macOS Tahoe the last version for Hackintosh?
Yes. macOS 27 runs only on Apple silicon, so Tahoe is the final macOS that can run on Intel or AMD PCs.
