How to Fix iMessage, FaceTime and iCloud on a Hackintosh (iServices Guide)

iMessage, FaceTime, iCloud and the App Store are a big part of why people want macOS. On a Hackintosh, Apple’s services are also the first thing to break when the setup isn’t quite right, with errors like “An error occurred during activation” or a message asking you to contact Apple support with a customer code.

The fix is almost always the same set of steps. This guide explains how Apple’s services identify your machine and how to fix iMessage on a Hackintosh properly, without shared serials or risky shortcuts.

Quick answer: To make iMessage, FaceTime and iCloud work on a Hackintosh: generate a unique SMBIOS for a supported Mac model (serial, MLB, UUID), make sure the serial is not already used by a real Mac, set ROM to your network card’s MAC address, make sure your network interface is en0 and marked as built-in, confirm NVRAM works, then sign in to iCloud before iMessage.

Why Apple services fail on a Hackintosh

When you sign in, Apple’s servers check a set of identifiers from your machine: the serial number, the board serial (MLB), the ROM value and a system UUID, all provided by OpenCore through your SMBIOS settings. If these are missing, invalid, shared with other users or inconsistent, activation fails.

The most common culprit is a prebuilt EFI that still contains someone else’s serial numbers.

Step 1: Generate a unique SMBIOS

  1. Use GenSMBIOS to generate a serial number, MLB (board serial) and SmUUID for a Mac model that suits your hardware and macOS version. For Tahoe, that means iMac20,x, MacPro7,1 or MacBookPro16,x.
  2. Put these values in PlatformInfo > Generic in your config.plist.
  3. Check the serial on Apple’s check coverage page. It should come back as not valid (or not found). If it matches a real device, generate another one. Never use a real Mac’s serial.

Step 2: Set ROM and make sure your network is en0

  • ROM: set PlatformInfo > Generic > ROM to the MAC address of your Ethernet adapter (without colons, as data).
  • en0: in System Information, Network, your Ethernet or Wi-Fi should be en0. If it isn’t, reset network settings by deleting the NetworkInterfaces.plist file and reboot.
  • Built-in: en0 should report as built-in. Many Ethernet kexts do this automatically; otherwise device properties can mark it as built-in.

A working network adapter as en0 is essential, even if you normally use Wi-Fi.

Step 3: Check NVRAM and the basics

  • NVRAM must work (native, or emulated on boards that need it), because Apple services store tokens there
  • System date and time must be correct
  • Your Apple ID should already be signed in on another Apple device if possible, and in good standing
  • Sign in to iCloud in System Settings first, then open Messages and FaceTime

Fixing the “customer code” message

If Messages shows an activation error with a customer code, Apple has flagged the machine’s identifiers. Don’t keep generating new serials and retrying, which can make things worse. Check that your SMBIOS is valid and unique, then contact Apple support with the code as the message instructs. After support clears it, sign in again.

Warning: never copy a real Mac’s serial number into your Hackintosh. It can cause problems for the owner of that Mac and for your Apple ID.

Changing SMBIOS after an upgrade

Upgrading to Tahoe sometimes means switching to a newer SMBIOS model. Sign out of iMessage and FaceTime before the change, generate a new serial, MLB and UUID for the new model, then sign back in. More in our Sequoia to Tahoe upgrade guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why is iMessage not working on my Hackintosh?

Usually because of an invalid, missing or shared SMBIOS serial, a wrong ROM value, a network adapter that isn’t en0 or broken NVRAM.

Can Apple ban my Apple ID for using a Hackintosh?

Apple doesn’t appear to ban accounts for this. Activation problems usually come from invalid or shared serial numbers and can be cleared by Apple support.

Should my Hackintosh serial number be valid on Apple’s coverage site?

No. It should come back as not valid, meaning it doesn’t belong to a real Mac. Using a real Mac’s serial causes problems.

Does FaceTime work on a Hackintosh?

Yes, with the same setup as iMessage: a unique SMBIOS, correct ROM, en0 as built-in and working NVRAM.

Do I need a Broadcom Wi-Fi card for iMessage?

No. iMessage works over Ethernet or any supported Wi-Fi. Broadcom mainly helps with AirDrop and Continuity.
