Hackintosh Sleep and Wake Not Working? How to Fix Instant Wake, Black Screens and More

Sleep is where you find out whether a Hackintosh was built carefully. Everything can look perfect until you close the lid or click Sleep, and then the machine wakes instantly, never wakes, wakes to a black screen or quietly reboots.

This guide shows you how to diagnose Hackintosh sleep problems and fix the most common causes, step by step.

Quick answer: Most Hackintosh sleep problems come from an incomplete USB map, missing ACPI fixes for instant wake (GPRW/UPRW), BIOS settings like wake-on-LAN and ErP, GPU issues on wake, or hibernation settings. Check the wake reason with pmset, map your USB ports properly, disable unnecessary wake sources and set hibernatemode to 0 on desktops.

First, find out why it wakes

Open Terminal and run:

pmset -g log | grep -e "Wake from" -e "DarkWake" -e "Sleep " | tail -20

The wake reason (for example XHC, GLAN, RTC or EC) tells you which device triggered the wake. Also check pmset -g assertions to see which process is preventing sleep.

Fix 1: Map your USB ports properly

An incomplete USB map is the number one cause of sleep problems. macOS has a limit of 15 ports per USB controller, and unmapped or wrongly typed ports can stop sleep or cause instant wake. Create a proper USB map for your motherboard (for example with USBToolBox), set the correct port types and include your internal Bluetooth port. Then remove XhciPortLimit if you used it for installation.

Fix 2: Stop instant wake with ACPI fixes

On many Intel and AMD boards, USB and LAN devices report that they can wake the system. The classic fix is an SSDT (commonly called GPRW or UPRW) or an equivalent patch that stops these devices from triggering instant wake. Make sure your EC and USBX SSDTs are also in place, since USB power properties affect sleep.

Fix 3: Check BIOS settings

  • Disable Wake on LAN and wake from USB devices you don’t need
  • Enable ErP (on Gigabyte and some other boards) if it helps with shutdown and sleep
  • Disable any RGB or fan controller software wake features
  • Keep the BIOS updated, but re-check settings after updating

Fix 4: Use the right power settings

Desktops don’t need hibernation, and hibernation is a common source of trouble. These commands are widely used on Hackintosh desktops:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
sudo pmset -a standby 0
sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0
sudo pmset -a powernap 0
sudo pmset -a proximitywake 0

Also disable “Wake for network access” in System Settings, Energy or Battery, if you don’t need it. On laptops, keep hibernation settings more conservative and test carefully.

Fix 5: Graphics and display issues on wake

Black screens after wake usually trace back to the GPU setup: wrong framebuffer patches for Intel iGPUs, connector problems on some Radeon cards, or a SMBIOS that doesn’t match your graphics configuration. Update WhateverGreen and Lilu, try the other video outputs on your card and double-check your SMBIOS choice. On Tahoe, the Dortania notes report WhateverGreen connector issues with some AMD cards, with a documented manual pikera workaround.

Fix 6: Check CPU power management

Broken CPU power management can also break sleep. Make sure you have the right SSDT-PLUG (or equivalent for your platform), a SMBIOS that matches your CPU generation and CFG Lock handled properly. See the CPU guide for platform-specific notes.

Still not sleeping properly?

Sleep problems can take hours to track down because they involve USB, ACPI, GPU and BIOS all at once. Our remote troubleshooting service fixes them with a proper USB map and clean ACPI patches. Send your details for a free check.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Hackintosh wake up immediately after sleep?

Usually because USB or network devices trigger wake. Map your USB ports, apply a GPRW/UPRW fix and disable wake-on-LAN in the BIOS.

Why won’t my Hackintosh wake from sleep?

Common causes are an incomplete USB map, hibernation settings, GPU problems on wake and power management issues. Check pmset logs and panic reports.

Should I disable hibernation on a Hackintosh?

On desktops, yes. Setting hibernatemode to 0 avoids many sleep problems. Laptops need more careful testing.

How do I check what woke my Hackintosh?

Run pmset -g log in Terminal and look for “Wake from” entries, which show the wake reason.

Does USB mapping really affect sleep?

Yes. It is the single most common cause of Hackintosh sleep and wake problems.
