One of the best things about a Hackintosh is that it doesn’t have to choose. With a dual boot setup, you can game and run Windows-only software at full speed, then reboot into macOS for Final Cut, Logic or Xcode.
This guide explains how to set up a Hackintosh dual boot with Windows 11, whether to use separate drives or one SSD, and how to fix the three problems almost everyone runs into.
Quick answer: The most reliable Hackintosh dual boot uses a separate SSD for each operating system, with OpenCore installed on the macOS drive and set as the first boot option. Dual booting from one SSD also works with careful partitioning. Afterwards, fix the clock difference with the RealTimeIsUniversal registry setting and enable LauncherOption in OpenCore so Windows updates can’t take over the boot order.
Separate drives or the same SSD?
| Separate drives | Same SSD | |
|---|---|---|
| Reliability | Best: each OS has its own EFI and can’t overwrite the other | Good with careful setup |
| Setup difficulty | Easy | Medium |
| Risk during installs | Low (disconnect the other drive) | Higher: one mistake can wipe a partition |
| Cost | Needs a second SSD | No extra hardware |
If you can afford a second SSD, use separate drives. It avoids nearly every dual-boot headache.
Method 1: Dual boot with separate drives
- Install Windows 11 on its own drive with only that drive connected, if possible.
- Install macOS on the second drive and copy your working OpenCore EFI to that drive’s EFI partition.
- In the BIOS, set the macOS drive’s OpenCore entry as the first boot option.
- OpenCore will show both macOS and Windows in its boot picker. Set a default and a timeout in config.plist (ShowPicker, Timeout).
Tip: keeping Windows on its own drive means its EFI and boot manager stay separate from OpenCore, which makes Windows updates much less disruptive.
Method 2: Dual boot on the same SSD
- Back up everything first.
- Partition the drive with a GUID partition table. Leave the EFI partition at least 200 MB, and many people prefer to install Windows first and then shrink its partition to make free space for macOS.
- In the macOS installer, open Disk Utility and format the free space as APFS, then install macOS there.
- After install, put OpenCore in the shared EFI partition alongside Microsoft’s boot folder, and make sure OpenCore boots first.
Be careful: Disk Utility shows whole-disk and partition options. Erasing the wrong item removes Windows. Double-check the target before clicking Erase.
Fix 1: The clock is wrong after switching OS
macOS stores the hardware clock in UTC, while Windows uses local time by default, so the clock jumps every time you switch. The standard fix is to tell Windows to use UTC with the RealTimeIsUniversal registry value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation, set to 1. Back up the registry before changing it.
Fix 2: Windows updates take over the boot order
Windows sometimes puts its own Boot Manager first after an update. Enable LauncherOption (for example set to Full) in OpenCore’s Misc > Boot section so OpenCore registers itself with the firmware and protects its place in the boot order. Setting the BIOS boot order again also works in a pinch.
Fix 3: Windows 11 requirements and BitLocker
- TPM 2.0: Windows 11 needs TPM 2.0, so enable fTPM (AMD) or PTT (Intel) in the BIOS. It doesn’t affect macOS.
- Secure Boot: Windows 11 requires a Secure Boot capable PC, but OpenCore setups usually boot with Secure Boot disabled. Many dual-boot users keep it disabled; the alternative is signing OpenCore, which is advanced.
- BitLocker: changing boot settings can trigger BitLocker recovery. Save your recovery key before you start.
- Booting Windows through OpenCore: OpenCore applies ACPI patches to every OS it boots. Well-written SSDTs include OS checks, but if Windows misbehaves, boot it from the BIOS boot menu instead.

Frequently asked questions
Can I dual boot Windows 11 and macOS on one SSD?
Yes. Partition the drive with GPT, install both systems on separate partitions and let OpenCore boot first. Separate drives are more reliable, though.
Should I install Windows or macOS first?
On separate drives the order doesn’t matter much. On one SSD, many people install Windows first, then shrink its partition and install macOS in the free space.
Why is my clock wrong after using Windows?
macOS keeps the hardware clock in UTC and Windows uses local time. Set RealTimeIsUniversal in the Windows registry to fix it.
Why did Windows disappear from the OpenCore menu?
Check that ScanPolicy allows Windows to be found, and that the Windows EFI files are intact. Updates or a disconnected drive are common causes.
Is it safe to boot Windows through OpenCore?
Usually yes, if your SSDTs include proper OS checks. If you see issues in Windows, boot it from the BIOS boot menu instead.
